Meridian Public School District Kicks Off 2026-2027 School Year with Annual Back-to-School Convocation

MERIDIAN, MS – The Meridian Public School District officially launched the 2026-2027 school year Monday afternoon with its annual Back-to-School Convocation on the campus of Meridian High School, bringing together faculty, staff, administrators, and community leaders to celebrate a new year of learning and leadership.

The program opened with a warm welcome from City of Meridian Mayor Percy Bland, followed by greetings from MPSD Board President Kimberly Houston.

Superintendent Dr. Amy Carter introduced the district's leadership team before delivering the annual "We Are Meridian" presentation, highlighting the district's commitment to inspiring excellence and empowering every scholar to succeed.

School spirit took center stage as campuses across the district were recognized, with each school's faculty and staff showcasing their Wildcat pride.

The keynote address was delivered by Attorney Elizabeth "Liz" Huntley of the HOPE Institute. Huntley shared an inspiring message titled "More Than a Bird," encouraging educators to recognize the impact they have on the lives of students and to continue leading with purpose, resilience, and compassion.

The convocation concluded with MPSD's annual Years of Service Recognition, honoring employees for their dedication and commitment to the students, families, and community they serve.

"As we begin another school year, we are reminded that every employee plays a vital role in shaping the future of our scholars," said Dr. Amy Carter. "This convocation is an opportunity to celebrate our team, reflect on our mission, and prepare to make a difference in every classroom, every day."

All MPSD Campuses will host Open House on Thursday, August 6, 2026, from 3p.m.-6p.m. Students will return to classrooms on Friday, August 7, marking the official start of the 2026-2027 school year across the Meridian Public School District.
