Much-needed rain didn’t stop residents of Western Gardens from attending the “Reading Is My Super Power” event on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The event is an effort by the Meridian Public School District Foundation of Educational Excellence to spread the love of reading throughout the community.
During the hour-long event, parents and children were able to hear from MPSD Superintendent Dr. Amy Carter, MPSD Foundation Board President Neil Henry, and MPSD Foundation Board Member Angela Turner about the importance of developing a love for reading at an early age and the impact attending school daily can have on a child’s grades.
“We’re thrilled to be able to promote the importance of literacy and attendance with our friends at the Meridian Housing Authority Western Gardens Apartments,” said Neil Henry, MPSD Foundation President. “The kids loved the book-reading portion of our night, while the parents were very involved, too. We’re thankful to the attendees and see more coming to the upcoming events because it was fun and all about learning!”
Kim Bailey, MPSD Early Literacy Coordinator, read “Alexander and the No Good, Horrible, Very Bad Day” to the children and discussed the different strategies parents can use to ensure students comprehend what they are reading.
“I am so thankful to the Meridian Public School District Foundation and the Meridian Housing Authority for their partnership to host this event and their willingness to talk about the importance reading and regular school attendance plays in a child’s education,” said MPSD Superintendent Dr. Amy Carter.
The evening concluded with the children being able to visit the Wildcat Wagon to pick out a book to take home.
The next “Reading Is My Superpower” event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at Eastern Gardens from 5:30 p.m.-6 p.m. For a complete list of “Reading Is My Superpower” events, visit the MPSD Foundation of Excellence Website: www.mpsdfoundation.org.
