MHS senior Jonathan Vaughn signed to further his academic and athletic career at Southeastern Louisiana University in a ceremony held in the MHS Multipurpose Building on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

Family and friends gathered at the ceremony to watch Vaughn sign to continue his playing career after graduation from MHS in the spring. He will compete in football and track for the Lions.

“It’s just a good program, the coaches showed me a lot of love, being able to run track and play football was really important also,” said Vaughn.

Vaughn had this to say on what it means to be built by Meridian.

“Just a toughness and resilience, knowing how to lose, how to win, and how to grow,” said Vaughn.

“Anytime you know, one of your players can take a step and go to the next level and we talk to these kids all the time about who they represent and that they represent more than themselves,” said John Douglass, MHS Head Football Coach. “To have a representative of Meridian High School, a Wildcat; to be able to go to the next level, Southeastern Louisiana, is a great school, they play great football down there. So having Jonathan down there really means a lot to him and his family and this program as well.”

MHS head football coach John Douglass had this to say about Vaughn and being built by Meridian.

“We want our guys that leave our program to have a work ethic, and to understand the meaning of responsibility and accountability and obliviously be willing to work hard and do everything that your coaches and teachers ask you to do, and understand what your responsibilities are and hold yourself accountable for fulfilling those responsibilities,” said John Douglass, MHS Head Football Coach. “Those are some of the qualities that we try to instill in the young men that come through this program and there’s not a better example than Jonathan Vaughn.”

Vaughn played offense for the Wildcat Football team and competes in several events for the MHS Track and Field team. He set a school record in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of (21.90) becoming the 6A State Champion in 2021.
