Trussell named new MPSD Athletic Director
January 30, 2020 - Meridian Public School District is proud to announce the hiring of Dr. Cheyenne Trussell as the new athletic director for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. Dr. Trussell graduated from Meridian High School in 1979 and was a member of the undefeated Big Eight Conference championship football team of 1978.
Dr. Trussell has previously served as a coach, teacher, and administrator for over thirty years, serving as athletic director for the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District since 2017. He served as executive director of student services and activities for the Hattiesburg Public School District prior to his move to Starkville.
“I am so glad that Dr. Trussell is coming home to his alma mater. He knows that the Meridian Public School District strives for excellence and is accustomed to success in all phases of athletics,” said MPSD Superintendent Dr. Amy Carter. “I am looking forward to Dr. Trussell being a part of that Wildcat success again.”
Dr. Trussell graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi and received his master's and doctorate degrees from Jackson State University. He began his career in Louisiana and spent two years in North Carolina before moving to the Jackson Public School District in 1989. He served in administrative roles in Jackson and as assistant director of athletics from 1999-2002 until his move to Hattiesburg. Dr. Trussell added seven additional sports during his tenure at Hattiesburg.
For the last four years under his leadership, all Hattiesburg High School and Starkville High School varsity sports were elected to the Mississippi High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Scholarly Team with a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher. He has also been recognized as the MHSAA Athletic Director of the Year.
